This piece was fun to create because I love funky, colorful spaces. I want to plop down here with a sketch pad and my tea and get lost in my thoughts. In this little space, I get to be 100% me.
As fun and happy as this painting is, it also carries deep meaning for me. Life is growing from the striped container someone gave me flowers in when I lost gestational twins 8 years ago. I drew a soft, upside down heartbeat pattern into the seam of the couch, remembering all the times I had an ultrasound and hoped to see a heartbeat on the monitor. This became yet another "mommy-daughter" collaboration piece since my daughter's original drawings are the artwork on the wall above the seating.
Tapping into the core of who I am as a designer is changing the way I paint, but my paintings are no less personal than they always have been. Merging what I know of the two different skill sets - painting and design - has opened the door to a whole new creative experience.
